Design that gets read, not just filed

Annual reports with a board deadline. The easy-read version that has to say the same thing in a way anyone can follow. Logos, posters, manuals, training packs and templates your team can reuse. Design is a standing service here — senior, experienced with public-sector and charity work, and drawn bespoke to your brief every time.

01 The problemDiagnosis before build

Diagnosis first

The document exists. Nobody gets past page three.

We do not quote until we understand what is actually going wrong. The first conversation is free, and it ends with a clear recommendation and a realistic figure — not a sales follow-up.

Four months to write. Read properly by nobody.

That is not a design problem discovered late in the process. It is a design problem from the first draft, because nobody decided what the reader should take away, or in what order they should meet it.

The other failure is quieter: the document that never gets made in the versions it needs. A report exists as one dense PDF, so the young people it is about never see it, the funder skims it, and the summary the chief executive needs for a board pack gets rebuilt in a slide deck at midnight. Meanwhile the poster goes up next to a leaflet in a different typeface, and the identity nobody wrote down drifts a little further apart.

We work the other way round. Who reads this, what should they be able to do afterwards, and which versions does that require. Then the layout, the data, the images and the reading order follow. Everything is drawn to your brief and your brand — nothing is pulled off a template library — and it is delivered print-ready, with editable templates for the things your team will remake next year.

02 What we buildScope, in plain terms

The work itself

A standing design service, not an add-on.

Drawn bespoke to your brief and your brand every time. Print-ready artwork with press liaison where you need it, and editable templates built in software your team already has.

  • Accessible PDF structure and tagging
  • Large-print and high-contrast versions
  • Consistent symbol and image sets

  • Report and newsletter shells
  • Social and digital asset templates
  • A short written guide to using them

03 How it runsFive stages, five decisions

Stage by stage

You always know what happens next.

Every stage ends with something written and a decision that belongs to you. Nothing proceeds on an assumption we have not put in front of you.

  1. 01BriefWho reads it, what they should take away, which versions are needed, and the immovable deadline.
  2. 02StructureContent order, page count and the data story agreed before any layout — the cheapest stage to change your mind in.
  3. 03DesignConcepts on the pages that matter, then the full document. Reviewed in print as well as on screen where it will be printed.
  4. 04AmendA stated number of amendment rounds, with a single consolidated set of comments each time. Extra rounds are quoted, never assumed.
  5. 05DeliverPrint-ready artwork, digital versions, accessible PDF, editable templates and every source file.

04 What you getIn writing, and yours

Ownership

Yours to keep, and to take elsewhere.

Everything we make is handed over in full — the files, the code, the accounts, the documentation. Most clients stay with us because the working relationship earns it, not because anything is held back.

Source filesEditable design files handed to you, not just flattened PDFs.
Print-ready artworkCorrect bleed, colour space and specification, checked with the printer where we manage it.
Accessible versionsStructured, tagged PDFs and easy-read editions where the audience needs them. Our standards
Brand rulesWritten guidelines your other suppliers can follow, so the identity holds.
TemplatesBuilt in the software your team already uses, with a short written guide.
Amendment roundsStated in the scope, so the cost does not drift with the feedback.

Before you email

The questions we get asked most.

Answered plainly, so you can rule us in or out without a meeting. If the answer you need is not here, ask — we will give you the same straight answer by email.

Q1 Can you write the content as well as design it?

Yes. Writing and editing are available alongside design, and reports usually work better when the two are done together. If you would rather write it yourselves, we will give you a structure and a word count per section to write into.

Q2 We have a brand already. Will you work within it?

Yes, that is the normal case. If the guidelines are thin or contradictory we will point out where they break and offer to tighten them — but we will not quietly redesign your identity inside a report job.

Q3 What is easy read, exactly?

A separate document that carries the same information in plain language, with one idea per page and supporting imagery, designed for readers who find dense text a barrier. It is not the main report at a larger font size. For public bodies it is frequently a requirement, and it should be planned from the start rather than added at the end.

Q4 How many rounds of amendments do we get?

The number is stated in the scope, and each round expects one consolidated set of comments from your side. That keeps the price honest for both of us. Extra rounds are quoted before they are done.

Q5 Do you handle printing?

We supply print-ready artwork, and we will manage the print and liaise with the press if you want us to. Print itself is charged at cost and quoted separately so you can see it.

Q6 Can you turn something around quickly?

Sometimes, and we will be honest about it rather than take the work and miss. If a deadline is genuinely fixed, tell us the date first — it changes what we recommend building.
